Osteopathy

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a holistic form of healthcare that recognises the body as an integrated and interconnected whole. It is based on the understanding that structure and function are closely related, and that optimal health relies on the body’s ability to adapt, self-regulate, and maintain balance.

Osteopathic treatment focuses on identifying and addressing areas of restriction or imbalance that may affect the body’s overall function. Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, osteopathy considers how different systems of the body interact and influence one another.

By using gentle, hands-on techniques, osteopathic care aims to support mobility, circulation, neurological function, and balance within the body. This approach supports the body’s natural capacity to adapt and function more effectively, promoting improved movement, comfort, and overall wellbeing.

Principles of Osteopathic treatment

Osteopathy is founded on 4 core principles that guide assessment and treatment, emphasising the relationship between structure, function, and overall health.

1) The body functions as a whole

  • The body is not a collection of separate parts — it works as an integrated system. The musculoskeletal, nervous, circulatory, and visceral systems constantly interact with one another. When one area is restricted or under strain, other areas may compensate.

  • Osteopathy considers the whole person — including physical, mental and emotional influences — to support balance and overall wellbeing.

2) The body has an inherent capacity to adapt and restore balance

  • When given the right support, the body has a natural ability to regulate and heal. Treatment aims to create the conditions that allow this process to occur more effectively.

3) Structure and function are closely connected

  • How the body moves influences how it feels — and how it functions influences how it moves. Restrictions in structure may affect function, and ongoing strain or altered function can influence the body’s structure over time.

4) Treatment is guided by these principles

  • Osteopathic care is based on an understanding of these relationships. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, treatment aims to address underlying factors and support the body’s natural ability to function with greater ease.
